Just a few notes…

PUBLIC LIBRARY… We will be walking to the Babbitt Public Library on Friday, October 1st. We will leave school about 1:25. I do not need any extra chaperones, but you are always more than welcome to walk with us. It is going to be a beautiful day!! Students may bring their own library card to check out books. Students who would like to get a library card may bring in their form and we will get it taken care of on Friday. I am planning to walk to the library during the fall about every three weeks. I am also more than happy to drop off books, so students are not late returning books, if we do not get there in time as a class.

WORD-A-DAY…The Word-A-Day program has been used in the Babbitt-Embarrass Elementary School since 1988. It is patterned after a program created by Marlene Glaus, a third grade teacher from the Richfield School System. I intend to continue the tradition of the Word-A-Day program. Word-A-Day is a good language experience.

Each day the student is assigned a word. It is their responsibility to find the definition of the word and be prepared the following day to demonstrate that they know the meaning of the word.

WAD will include three parts this year
1. definition of the word
The word may be found in a dictionary or using an online dictionary. There are
plenty of dictionaries at school if your home needs one. Let me know.

2. illustration of the word
The illustration may include a drawing by the student, a picture printed off the
internet or one found in a magazine or a toy. For example, if the WAD was feline,
they might cut out a picture of a feline from a magazine, draw a picture of a feline, or
bring in a toy feline to show the class. They may even bring in their real live feline,
with permission.

3. a sentence demonstrating the meaning of the word
The sentence only needs be one sentence long, not a paragraph, but must use the word
correctly, have correct spelling and punctuation.

This will count toward three Word A Day point daily. This is a separate grade on the report card for third grade. Students who are absent will be exempt from the word for the next day. There is no late work accepted with WAD. Students must turn it in on time. If all they have time for is the definition and do not include a sentence or picture then they will receive 1 point, not 3. Doing all three parts will be their choice, but they will be graded accordingly.

We will start with Word-A-Day for homework on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. There will not be any Word-A-Day homework over the weekend. Students should write the word on top of their notebook page, and then the definition under the word. The illustration should be glued to the page and the sentences at the bottom of the page. All three parts should be on one page. I highly recommend a steno type notebook for this project, but any notebook will do, just keep all WAD for the year in one notebook. There is not a “wrong” definition for the word; it’s the child’s choice which definition they write down.

Mrs. Barich’s Open House Information

The following is a list and a somewhat brief description of things that happen in 3rd grade. They are in no particular order, other than how they popped into my head as I typed this.

MATH The SRA Real Math model has many exciting components. There is an online text book, and students will have access to math games, that will relate to our daily lesson through the web site. I will be sending more information home about this as we progress through the series. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction math facts at home. Students will learn multiplication facts in 3rd grade. This will be a LARGE part of 3rd grade math. More info to come on multiplication facts later in the school year.
READING This year we will be starting a new reading series, called Mondo Reading. There will be flexible reading groups with many other reading activities going on in the classroom at one time. Students will be expected to work independently, but will also be a part of a small group that they will be required to contribute to book discussion for stories they have read. Students will work in five areas of reading each day, reading to yourself, listening to reading, work on writing, word work, and time with teacher.

SPELLING I will send home the spelling list every Monday. This will be part of the homework for the week. Students are to practice the spelling words at home during the week. I will give a pretest in class and students will have a spelling test on Friday.

LANGUAGE ARTS/GRAMMAR The language arts program will fit in with the reading program. Student will often write a paragraph to go along with the week’s story. I will teach grammar from various worksheets and workbooks. We will start the day with 2 daily oral language sentences on the board, the students will look for grammatical errors to correct in these sentences.

HANDWRITING Students will start the year off writing manuscript and then around the end of October, I will start teaching cursive writing.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES We will be doing lots of fun science with the Foss Science kits. We will also read from the Science Weekly newspaper. I will use the textbook and map workbook to teach social studies.

Word A Day Student will bring home a word three times a week. Student is to look up the definition of the word for 1 point and 1 point extra credit is given if a picture or prop is included. This assignment should be kept in a WORD A DAY notebook.

MUSIC/ART/LIBRARY Mr. Rouse is the music teacher, Mrs. Ronn is the art teacher and Ms. Hamm is the media teacher.
READING COUNTS Reading counts is a reading program installed on all school computers. Students will choose library books at their reading level (lexile level), which I find from the MAPS/NWEA test the students took last year. After the student finishes the story they will take a 10 question test on the computer. A reading goal will be set for the 1st marking period. This will be added into the students reading grade.

GRADES Students are graded in all subjects listed above. I use letter grade for most subjects. I will only put letter grades on test, not most daily work, but all work is weighted equally.

I EXPECT I expect students will respect me and all other adults in the building at all times. At home please stress the importance of respect, organization, friendliness, good behavior and manners from your child. I except that your child will do their home work and come to school prepared and rested for the day.

QUALITY WORK I expect quality work. Student will be asked to redo work that is poor, sloppy or rushed work.

HOMEWORK Any work that is not finished during the day is home work. There will be some home work assignments. There will be reports throughout the year that will also be home work assignments as well.

LATE WORK All work must be turned in on time. Any late work must be completed by the end of the school day or the student will get a zero on that assignment until it is turned in and then graded accordingly, minus 2 point for a late assignment. Students are still responsible for completing all late work.

SNACK Students will take a working snack break every morning around 10:00. Snacks should be nutritious. I will not allow students to eat candy or drink pop during snack time.

WATER BOTTLES Water bottles will be allowed during snack time only, but after snack it must be put away. Mr. Friedlieb has asked that student not have water bottles in class.

BIRTHDAYS Birthday treat are welcome.

FOLDERS I will send home folder each Monday with the previous weeks work. I write a weekly newsletter to be included in the folder.

BOOK ORDER I will send home book orders about once a month. Please make your check out to the Scholastic Book Club.

Volunteers You are always welcome in my classroom. I would love to have you volunteer your knowledge or special talent with the class. I would welcome volunteers to help with math facts, reading, class parties and what ever else is needed during the year. Volunteers must check in the office first, but feel like you are always welcome in your child’s classroom.

DATES
Picture Day is October

Attendance/Absence Daily attendance is expected from your child. We do get started with class by 8:30 daily – so being on time is important. If your child is ill or will miss school for some reason, a note is required when your child returns to school. The office appreciates a call in the morning if your child will not be in school.

PHONE CALLS please try to leave a message with the office if there is an emergency change of after school plans or send me a note in the morning. I am very busy from 2:50 – 3:10, so calling at this time for a last minute change will likely be missed by me.

Email tbarich@isd2142.k12.mn.us

I hope that you will use the blog to keep informed about third grade events.

Please call, email or send a note if you have any questions or concerns. Please keep me informed. It helps if I know “stuff” so I can make your child’s third grade day go well.

Supply List

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am looking forward to a new school year. I am starting to think about getting my classroom ready for the first day of school. I started my teaching career in third grade and it was my third grade teacher that helped me decide to be a teacher, so third grade is the place for me!

The first day of school, September 7th, is an open house day for the elementary. I look forward to meeting you on the 7th. Please watch the mail and the blog spot for an agenda outlining the day.

I will be writing a “teacher blog” again this year. You can access it through the Babbitt-Embarrass School home page. Click on Elementary Links, click on Mrs. Barich and that will bring you to the blog.

We will be starting a new reading series this year; I am very excited about this. We will work hard in math, learning the facts and many other math processes too. There will be social studies, science and art projects and lots of fun too. There will be some homework nearly every night in third grade. We will talk more about this during the open house.

Below is a list of school supplies. Please label all the supplies and bring them to school on the September 7th. The Lion’s Club is VERY GENEROUS with the school supplies that they give to the students each year, so don’t buy too many things.
The following school supplies are recommended...
v Pencils(please sharpen them before the first day of school)
v 3 notebooks (wide –ruled). I was at a workshop this summer and they used the composition size notebook. I really like this size as the pages are not as intimidating and work great for a journal too. So… I would like the students to have 3 notebooks, your choice on regular notebooks or composition size
v 2-2 pocket folder
v 8 pack of original color Crayola markers(the Lion’s Club usually gives crayons)
v Glue stick(s)
v Scissors
v Back pack or school bag (students should carry this everyday)
v Gym Shoes (clean tennis shoes work, new shoes are not required)

v Optional - dry erase marker
v Optional - Box of Kleenex
v Optional - Liquid hand soap (not hand sanitizer)
v Optional – disinfecting wipes

Remember that the school desks are small. Please do not send big folders and HUGE packs of crayons or markers to school, it does not all fit in the desk.
Of course I feel like there are a million details to fill you in on, but it will all come together as we move through the first few days of school.

See you very soon!!
